A cloud, heavy with water

A cloud, heavy with water,
came swaying astride the winds,
streamed through the night
gushed and surged like blood from a wound.
The sky, revealed at dawn amid its stars,
seemed like a meadow of violets, moist with dew
and burgeoning camomile flowers.

–Ibn al-Mu’tazz (translated by Bernard Lewis)
